RECAP on Mount Baker Public Safety Community Meeting, November 10th:

On Monday, November 10th, we were joined by William Mace, Education & Outreach Advisor Seattle Fire Department, Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins; and representatives from the Seattle Police Department; as well as Mark Solomon and Eddie Lin, representing the city council.

The bulk of what we heard was regarding fire safety and how we can protect our own properties and use cameras to help catch the perpetrator. See links below to the resources that were reviewed in the meeting. Additionally, we learned that when a fire is set intentionally, the fire department immediately involves a special unit of the SPD, so that there is also a police report filed and an investigation is started.

We also heard from SPD representatives with updates on the most recent arson attempts, but with these investigations still underway, they were not able to share very much information. We did learn that in response to the recent increase in crime targeting commercial businesses on South Rainier, South Precinct Captain Heidi Tuttle has designated a patrol car specifically to patrol the neighborhood. For more information on the arsons see an article in the Seattle Times on November 12th.
