13TH is a 2016 American documentary by director Ava DuVernay.  Centered on race in the United States criminal justice system, 13th refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which reads “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude . . . shall exist within the United States,” (unless as punishment for a crime)!  The progression from that qualifying clause to the horrors of mass criminalization and the sprawling and highly lucrative American prison industry is laid out by DuVernay with bracing lucidity, with a potent mixture of archival footage and testimony from activists, politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated women and men.

13TH is nominated for the 2017 Oscar Documentary (feature).   Tomato (film critics) gives this film a 97% rating!
