MBCC Charter

Organized in 1909, the Mount Baker Community Club (MBCC) is purported to be the oldest continuously active community club in the United States.  As a not-for-profit, all volunteer organization, MBCC relies on the active involvement of its members to accomplish many undertakings.  MBCC's tax identification number is 910980717.

Our Purpose

MBCC Mission To preserve and improve our community and to anticipate and effect future trends in a manner beneficial to all Mount Baker residents.
MBCC Goals
  • To provide organized activities to preserve neighborhood amenities
  • To provide representation, advocacy and assistance on issues of common concern to individuals and groups in our community
  • To promote social welfare by increasing understanding and cooperation, with special attention to promoting the rich cultural diversity of the Mount Baker community
  • To provide a gathering place and activities to bring our community together
  • To provide a forum for the exchange of information

Our Organization

MBCC Members Anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in the area bounded by Norman Street on the north, Martin Luther King, Jr. Way and Rainier Avenue on the west, Conover and Genesee Streets on the south, and Lake Washington Blvd. on the east.
Board Membership All voting members are eligible to be on the Board. Board positions include the chairs of all the standing committees, as well as the chairs of all special events, the newsletter, and other ad hoc positions.
Executive Committee All voting members are eligible for Executive Committee positions. These include the President, seven Vice-Presidents, the General Council, and the Recording Secretary. Terms are for two years, and are staggered, so that half the committee is new each year.

Our Meetings

Meeting Times Community meetings are held 7:30 PM on the first Monday of every month, from September to June at the MBCC Clubhouse, unless that Monday is a holiday, in which case the meeting is held on the 2nd Monday of that month. All members are welcome and invited.
Voting at Meetings All members 18 and older are eligible to vote.
Agenda Items Any issue of interest or concern to the community is welcome to be placed on the agenda. General announcements can be relayed to any member of the Executive Committee by Thursday prior to the monthly meeting. In order to provide for adequate public notification and discussion, issues requiring a vote of the membership should be presented at one meeting, a notice placed in the next newsletter (The Mount Baker View), and acted upon at the next month's meeting.

Our Finances

Club Dues Payment of dues is not required to be a member. Your dues go to support all of our other activities, including Day in the Park, the Christmas Ships, the Newcomer's/Community Potluck, Pied Piper Children's programs, the View newsletter, and many others. Please consider paying your dues at the highest level you can.
The Clubhouse The Clubhouse is operated as a self-supporting facility, with the income from rentals balancing out the costs of operation and maintenance. After a replacement reserve has been funded, any excess funds are allocated to the Discretionary Fund. For information about day-time or evening rentals, please call the Clubhouse manager at (206) 722-7209.
MLK Scholarship Fund As a separate fundraising effort, MBCC sponsors the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund, which assists annually college-bound students from the community who show academic promise, leadership and need. In 1995, we distributed six $2,000 scholarships to deserving students to help them further their studies.
Discretionary Fund MBCC budgets a small grant fund each year, to support activities which benefit the community. Applications for these funds are due quarterly, and are available from the Vice President for Human Services or the Vice President of the Clubhouse.
